Meet Dr. Adewuyi!
Dr. Adewuyi, now a third-year postdoctoral research associate in the School of Mining Engineering and Mineral Resources, works with Dr. Sehliselo Ndlovu and Dr. Kray Luxbacher. Before joining his current laboratory, Sefiu worked with Dr. Angelina Anani. Dr Adewuyi has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications, conference abstracts, and poster presentations. His research experience spans multiple countries (Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and the USA), but always with a central focus on improving mineral extraction and mapping geological structures.
Drawing on his dissertation-related studies, Dr. Adewuyi’s research focus is on microwave processing to reduce the energy demands of grinding – the most energy-intensive step in mineral processing. By exposing rocks to microwave radiation, the minerals heat and expand at different rates, creating microcracks. These cracks make the material easier to break apart, reducing grinding energy needs. Another area of focus explores how microwave radiation might enhance the extraction of critical minerals (e.g., copper) used in modern manufacturing. Both research projects support U.S. efforts to increase domestic production and reduce reliance on critical mineral imports.
In addition to these projects, Dr. Adewuyi has specialized skills in magnetometry – mapping underground geological structures using magnetic field data. Using his expertise, he collaborates with faculty members to acquire ground magnetic data and create subsurface structural maps for the expansion of the San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory, and mentors undergraduate and graduate students in the process. Mentorship is central to Dr. Adewuyi’s work, and his contributions in this area were recognized as a recipient of the UA’s 2025 Postdoc-as-Mentor Award (Honorable Mention). To date, he has mentored nearly a dozen undergraduate and graduate students, providing guidance and instruction in core research skills. He is also passionate about teaching. In 2024, he completed the CIRTL Postdoc Pathways Program teaching certificate to refine his skills in education and engagement. Reflecting on his journey, he encourages postdocs to embrace mentoring and teaching opportunities – especially if they plan to pursue faculty roles.
Through research, mentorship, and teaching, Dr. Adewuyi demonstrates his investment in innovative mining practices and developing future mining researchers and engineers.
