Postdoctoral Affairs wishes to congratulate Dr. Emily Bray on her recently published work on biology's role in dogs' communication abilities. Her research provides evidence that puppies are biologically prepared to interact with humans. Dr. Bray and her colleagues found that a puppy’s ability to follow human pointing gestures and engage in eye contact can largely be explained by their genetics. She hopes her research will inform our understanding of how dogs think and solve problems, which has implications for identifying potential service animals.

Dr. Bray’s work with Canine Companions for Independence, a California-based service dog organization, appeared in Current Biology last week. News of her recent publication was featured in the University of Arizona News and circulated in scientific research outlets and news sources across the country.

Dr. Bray is a past recipient of the Postdoctoral Research Development Grant (PRDG). Congratulations, Emily!
