Congratulations to 2026 Outstanding Postdoctoral Award Recipient, Dr. Kentaro Yumigeta!
Postdoctoral Affairs is happy to announce the recipient of the 2026 Outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar Award and 2026 Postdoc-as-Mentor Award, Dr. Kentaro Yumigeta!
Dr. Kentaro Yumigeta is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Arizona. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from Arizona State University. His research focuses on overcoming the fundamental scaling limits of conventional silicon electronics by developing next-generation nanoelectronics from atomically precise low-dimensional materials such as graphene nanoribbons. Through advances in crystal growth and materials integration, Dr. Yumigeta aims to translate these fundamental advances into scalable manufacturing processes, bringing these emerging devices closer to practical, energy-efficient computing applications.
The Outstanding Postdoctoral Scholar Award recognizes exceptional achievement in research innovation, productivity, communication, and leadership. Dr. Yumigeta was selected for his contributions to graphene nanoribbon technologies work that has already yielded multiple patent filings and invention disclosures, as well as an extraordinary publication and citation record that surpasses many early-career faculty members. He also stood out for his rare ability to secure competitive external funding as sole PI, including a prestigious New Frontiers of Sound Seed Project grant and full user access at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Molecular Foundry. His mentor describes him as "one of the most intelligent, hardworking, and ethical people" they have encountered in twenty years in academia.
